Transport designs canbe useful where space is constrained or airflow is not available directly overthe device requiring cooling. Examples of application characteristics wheretransport heat pipes solutions may solve design issues include:
Limitedheight or space—Heat pipes can spread the cooling solution volumehorizontally rather than vertically to achieve the desired thermal performance.
Obstructedairflow—Obstructions in the chassis may leave insufficientairflow over the device to be cooled. Connecting an evaporator to a remotecondenser using a heat pipe allows the condenser to be placed in an area ofunobstructed airflow to provide the necessary cooling.
Heat pipes can be added to an aluminum base when the use of higherthermally conductive metal like copper cannot be tolerated due to weight. Heat pipes can also beembedded in copper bases to increase spreading without adding mass to thesolution.
Elimination of fans or operating them at lower RPMs canincrease system reliability and lower maintenance costs. Passive solutionsusing heat pipes may increase performance at lower airflow than withconventional thermal solutions.
